LSU’s DBU Reputation is Back
It was destined to be a tough game for DJ Lagway in his first nighttime experience in the infamous Death Valley, but we can’t overlook the LSU defense’s performance in their first SEC matchup of the season. The interior defense forced pressure with 3 sacks total for the game, but they were constantly pressuring Lagway and influencing those horrible decisions in the pass game. It is also important to note that star LBs Whit Weeks got ejected for targeting on the first drive of the game and brother West Weeks got injured in the second half of the game. So even without 2 of our best interior defenders, the secondary stepped up and shined with FIVE interceptions. Fans have been waiting on a performance like this but LSU still found a way to exceed expectations.

Sophomore Dashawn Spears made his name as a LSU Tiger with 2 interceptions on Saturday night, including taking one back to the house to pull the Tigers away and give them a much needed cushion. 5-star freshman cornerback, DJ Pickett, made his first big play of hopefully many inside Tiger Stadium with an interception in the 4th quarter with 2 minutes left to take away any hope the Gators had left.

The Tigers’ Offense Needs to Step Up
While we were more pleased with the LSU offense much more than others, we can recognize that there is still much improvement to be made. The run game was the big headline after the Brian Kelly postgame interview, but the pass game is what should be under the microscope. We have one of, if not the best, receiver rooms in the nation but are not using it to its full potential. When you hear that the defense gave the offense 5 extra possessions by forcing turnovers, you have to expect the final score to reflect that. But the 20-10 victory on the scoreboard does not tell the story of this game at all. The LSU offense was completely stagnant in the second half, with no offensive points and only the pick 6 from the defense to pull the Tigers away from the 13-10 lead at halftime.

Until the last drive of the game, we only had one first down in the second half, while the defense forced 3 interceptions in the second half. But every time the offense got the ball, they gave it right back and were not able to move. Even in the first half, both of the drives where we were able to score field goals, they started in Florida territory with a 14-yard and 12-yard drive, capped off with 3 points each. So you could say that we had 1 one successful drive all game which worked last Saturday night but absolutely will not work later in the season when we face off against better offenses.

LSU Has the Potential This Year
Over the last few LSU seasons, we have witnessed such high-powered offenses not be backed up by a dominant defense but at this point in the season, it feels quite the opposite now. We have a defense that can keep us in the game, we know they will generate a few stops every Saturday. But it will take execution from both sides of the ball for this team to go as far as we know they can. But nonetheless, your LSU Tigers have started the season off 3-0 for the first time since the 2019 season. All fans would love a 50-point blowout victory every week, but Brian Kelly is doing what it takes to win which is much more important than our QB throwing for 500 yards and 6 touchdowns. This week we have another home game which should be a good tune-up game for the offense to get back to scheduled program before heading on the road for one of their toughest matchups of the season facing off against currently ranked 13th Ole Miss who is leading the SEC heading into week 4.
